Above is a section of my poster, SECOND MILLENNIUM BCE CHRONOLOGY: Ancient Near East & Hebrew Tradition.

Creating colorful, accurate posters of historical, religious, mythological, and legendary material is one of the main engagements I plan to undertake with Ancient Epics. Perhaps because my work background is manufacturing, which requires a lot of blueprint reading and drawing, I have long had the desire to put my research into graph and outline format. I have also found that having a visual chronology or outline aids in understanding and memorizing the target material, as well as giving some impetus for further research. In sum, a chronological poster can serve as an invitation to study as well as a map during the course of study.

The one element I found lacking in most timelines was a comparison of the ancient kingdoms on the same surface. Most charts and timelines only show one kingdom: only Egypt, or only Babylon, for instance. As shown above, my poster offers details of all the major players of the ancient world on the same timeline. (Note: if you are viewing this on a mobile device, more than one kingdom may not show. To see the whole chart, click here.)

I have many more ideas for posters, timelines, and graphs of history, myth, and legend. For now, I only have the Second Millennium BCE Chronology and Chronology of the Book of Genesis posters available as displayed below.

SECOND MILLENNIUM BCE CHRONOLOGY: Ancient Near East & Hebrew Tradition

This detailed, colorful poster of the second millennium BCE depicts the king lists of the major political entities of the time: Egypt, Hatti, Assyria, Babylonia, and Mittani. They are set on a twenty year scale to show how they synchronize. Additionally, significant events are noted on the scale to offer some historical substance for a given period. There are also a series of maps for each division (Mediterranean at left and Mesopotamian at right) that show political geography in chronological order. Finally, the center of the chart offers four proposed interpretations on how the biblical narrative of the patriarchs, Exodus, and Judges might fit within this period of history.

All aspects of this poster, including color choice, design, layout, maps, and notes, are the original creation of David D. Mahoney. James J. Mahoney assisted with some aspects of the chronological layout and Hebrew Bible timeline.

This poster has been reviewed for compliance with academic standards by Joshua J. Mark of World History Encyclopedia.

CHRONOLOGY OF THE BOOK OF GENESIS:

Timeline of Genesis & World History

As a chronological timescale, this poster offers a colorful, century by century layout of the major characters and events in the biblical book of Genesis. So as to show in what historical context the book of Genesis itself was written, a timeline after the events of Genesis is also included, which takes the reader down to the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon. Additionally, a timeline of world history, from prehistory to the rise of the Persian Empire, is set on the scale to show how the Hebrew vision of the beginning of history compares with the narrative of world history. Finally, along with a family tree of the patriarchs and matriarchs, a painting by Benjamin West on the expulsion of Adam and Eve is included to provide aesthetic appeal.

All aspects of this poster, including color choice, design, layout, and notes, are the original creation of David D. Mahoney, except for pictures and artwork, which are all in the public domain.
